CLAIRE AMIAS Claire is a RADA trained actor. She has worked extensively on stage and screen. She also acts, writes and directs for her theatre company A Monkey With Cymbals. On-screen Claire has played main supporting roles in numerous feature films including Mabel Smith in Borley Rectory (alongside Reece Shearsmith), Ms. Conrad in Telling Lies (alongside Jason Flemyng and Melanie Brown), the Young Nurse in Provoked (which starred Miranda Richardson and Robbie Coltrane), and Beattie in The Magic Hour. Stage roles have included Mags in Handbagged and Sheila in Relatively Speaking at Windsor Theatre Royal and on tour, and Maggie in Hobson’s Choice and Liz Essendine in Present Laughter at Chesterfield Pomegranate Theatre all for Paul Taylor-Mills. Also I have performed in several No 1 Tours – Funny Peculiar for Bill Kenwright and Handbagged for Eleanor Lloyd Prods.


EMMA KEELE trained at LAMDA and the Stella Adler Studio (NY). Theatre credits include: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (National Theatre – International Tour), Abigail’s Party (40th Anniversary Production, UK No.1 Tour) The End of the Line and A Bunch of Amateurs (both Southwold Summer Repertory), Yen (Gothenburg English Studio Theatre), April in Paris (UK No.1 tour), September in the Rain (UK No.1  Tour), Phaedra’s Love (Arcola Theatre), Torn Out Pages (Gilded Balloon for the Edinburgh Festival)

TV and film credits include: Emmerdale (ITV), Silent Witness (BBC), Coronation Street (ITV), Downton Abbey (ITV), Doctors (BBC), New Tricks (BBC), Downhill (Feature), 22. Anna Matthews (Short), Jo (Short) – for which Emma won the Bazza Film Festival Best Actress Award in 2018.

Emma also founded and runs Reduced Circumstances, a theatre company committed to nurturing talent and developing new work.

In this two-themed acting for beginners course you will be establishing the skills from previous terms, but don’t worry if you’re new to us, because you can fit right in and understand how to take re-direction, work on scenes from contemporary plays, build characters and add new skills to your acting process including, tackling complex characters emotions, understanding intention and working on presenting place and events in a script.

Led by acclaimed television and theatre actresses, Claire Amias (Theme One) and Emma Keele (Theme Two) who trained at RADA and LAMDA respectively, both have extensive experience on the West End, International Tours and much, much more. You will be in highly experienced hands.

Theme One Course Content: Who am I as an Actor? And what do I need to thrive?

  • WEEK ONE-THE ACTORS TOOLKIT-Body, Voice, Imagination. Going back to basics; introducing some of the key concepts and techniques that an actor needs to create a character, inhabit an imagined world and share their work effectively in performance
  • WEEK TWO-IMPROVISATION SKILLS-Re-finding and nurturing the childlike creativity that may have been buried by our adult lives and responsibilities, encouraging spontaneity and living in the moment to create scenes and characters
  • WEEK THREE-SCRIPTED SCENES-drama – working on stimulating and inspiring scenes from contemporary plays by some of the best playwrights of the last 50 years
  • WEEK FOUR-SCRIPTED SCENES-comedy – If drama is about preparing the audience for its narrative outcomes, then comedy is about surprising them, but how? Working on a range of material from different types of comedy, we will explore the art of the gag and how to get the laughs
  • WEEK FIVE-UNDER PRESSURE-Applying what you have learnt to an audition situation

Theme Two Course Content Digging Deeper and Stepping out of The Box

  • WEEK SIX-ACTING IS REACTING-Using improvisation to develop our spontaneity and ability to be in the moment with our scene partners and responsive to their creativity
  • WEEK SEVEN-PHYSICALITY-Challenging ourselves physically to see how we can move away from our own natural physicalities and learned physical behaviour to create something new and fresh
  • WEEK EIGHT-VOICE-Exploring the scope of the voice to create character and intention. Using a variety of techniques and exercises, we will play with accent, tone, pitch, tempo and projection to see how we can use the voice to tell our stories as actors
  • WEEK NINE-GENERATING EMOTION-How do we live in an imagined situation and generate authentic emotion that the audience will believe… and then repeat it at a set time every day for 8 shows a week! Tools and techniques to help you get out of your head and into your bodies and the given circumstances of the character
  • WEEK TEN-REHEARSAL SKILLS-So now you have to be a detective too! Script analysis and how to take the show from page to stage, making interesting creative choices that serve the world of the play and the collective visions of the playwright and your director
  • WEEK ELEVEN-GETTING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE-As you begin to gain an awareness of what your casting type is and where your strengths lie, in week six we challenge you to step out of the box and try something new
