Five Top Tips on How To Prepare for a Dance Audition

[Edited 03/08/2021]

Stage & the City are thrilled to be hosting auditions for our Contemporary Dance and Commercial Dance Companies.

Auditions can be a nerve-wracking experience for even the most experienced dancers. But there are a few helpful ways to make them more manageable.

So here are our top tips to help you prepare for a dance audition and stand out from the crowd:

Research

Before you go to your audition, you want to learn about who and what you are auditioning for. The differences between dance companies can be huge. So if you are informed, you’ll give yourself the best chance of fitting in. If you’ve been told the choreographer in advance, be sure to get online and research their style. This way, you’ll be able to pick things up quickly in the audition. Also, researching the company will make it easier to know what to wear and bring with you for the day.

Practice makes perfect

The ability to learn dance combinations is important when it comes to auditions. This is a skill that evolves with practice. Taking regular dance classes is an easy way to gain experience. We offer a range of dance classes at Stage & the City, all of which will help you develop your craft. As you learn more new styles, you’ll find it easier to pick up new choreography.

Arrive early

Make sure to give yourself time to arrive, settle, and warm up. To perform well without injuring yourself as a dancer, you must get a thorough warm-up to be able to perform well without injuring yourself. Arriving early will also give you time to learn and adapt to the space while settling your nerves. Use this time to centre yourself by taking a few slow breaths and tuning in with your body.

Remember that you’re all in the same boat

Auditions can be a nerve-wracking experience, and it can be easy to be overwhelmed by other dancers around you. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that everyone is in the same position as you, and every dancer is unique. Try to remember to shift the focus from worrying about others to presenting your best self. By focusing on your unique attributes, you’ll begin to relax and enjoy the process.

Be passionate

It’s easy to forget that you are at an audition because dancing is your passion. People enjoy watching others do what they love, so if you channel your passion into your audition, you are sure to shine. And if you’re not chosen, remember that it is just one opinion of many. The beauty of dance is that it is an art form with many different styles and tastes. So try not to take it too personally. Take your feedback and see it as an opportunity to make some improvements for the next audition. Each audition is an opportunity to practice and hone your skills!
