This high-octane, fun-packed course will have you moving and finding your rhythm whilst surrounded by a brand-new group of friends! Get ready to build confidence, develop technique and change your second left shoe to a right!

Contemporary is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several different genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. It’s a form of dance that strives to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

Our Contemporary Dance classes will teach you a fusion of techniques to build on a commercial style. Keeping that emotional input of rhythm, storytelling and performance. You will also explore your own body’s flexibility, coordination, freedom and efficiency of movement to different styles of music.

Our teacher will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy every minute of this course, which will give you a great workout as well as enhancing your dance technique and emotional exploration.

Once you have completed a couple of terms you will have the opportunity to audition for Stage & the City’s contemporary Dance Company, giving you opportunities to perform in competitions and showcases.

Course Content Summer Term:

  • WEEKS ONE-FIVE: Warm up (10 mins) – a combination of light cardio, yoga movements and gentle stretching to get the body prepared for dancing.
Technique (15 – 20 mins) – foundations for contemporary dance movement applied in a few different sequences, including footwork, turns, travelling and some small jumps. Usually in preparation for the choreography.
Choreography (30 mins) – the second half of the class focuses on learning a short dance routine. The music varies however past routines have included tracks such as Touch by Shura, Made to Love by John Legend, Emotions by Destiny’s Child and Next to Me by Delilah Montagu. The routine changes every 2 – 3 weeks depending on the class and how much we enjoy the routine!
  • WEEKS SIX-TEN: Same as weeks 1 – 5 but with a slightly faster pace. More technique is added in such as an introduction to floor work and travelling in different directions. The pace is still class led but the last few weeks will move slightly quicker applying previous sequences learnt and adding slightly more complex routines. By week 10, students will have built up more confidence with the technique learnt, strength in dancing and have a better understanding of contemporary movement in their body.

Please note that as we are an adult performing arts school, any video footage or photographs taken during your class may be used on our social media for marketing and promotional purposes.
