JEN WELCH Jen started dancing, performing, teaching and choreographing from a very early age in styles such as jazz, street, tap and musical theatre. As an adult, Jen then went on to consolidate her training in contemporary, ballet and contemporary jazz at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She has trained and worked with artists such as Rachel Lopez de Nieta, Rosemary Brandt, Hagit Yakira, Rosangela Silvestre and Tim Casson. Credits include T Mobile, BBC 2, Sadlers Wells, Richmix Festival, The Natural History Museum, plus many other dance festivals, theatre performances and private events across London.

This high-octane, fun-packed dance course for adults will have you moving and finding your rhythm whilst surrounded by a brand-new group of friends. Get ready to build confidence, develop technique and revitalise your creativity. Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several different genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. It’s a form of dance that strives to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.

Cultivate your dancing skills

Our Contemporary Dance classes will teach you a fusion of techniques to build on a commercial style, whilst developing your emotional exploration, storytelling and performing skills. You will also explore your own body’s flexibility, coordination, freedom and efficiency of movement to different styles of music. Our teacher will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and enjoy every minute of this course, which will give you a great workout as well as enhance your dance technique.

Once you have completed a couple of terms you will have the opportunity to audition for Stage & the City’s Contemporary Dance Company, giving you opportunities to perform in competitions and showcases.

Course Content - Summer Term

Weekly dance classes in London will look a little like this:

(SUBJECT TO MINOR CHANGES) SPECIFIC SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN THIS TERM: Travelling and direction changes, Arm and Leg coordination (moving at the same time), circular springs.

  • WEEK ONE: Warm up (10 mins) – yoga style, stretch and gentle strengthening. Technique (20 mins) – Small travelling sequences across the floor. Choreography (30 mins)
  • WEEK TWO: Same as week one but with added levels such as Limon inspired techniques
  • WEEK THREE: Same as weeks one and two but again with added levels such as a more complex travelling sequence
  • WEEK FOUR: Warm up (10 mins). Technique (20 mins)- focus on layering arms and legs moving together, coordination exercises with options to simplify if needed. Choreography (30 mins) continue working on same choreo and adding to it with new techniques learnt.
  • WEEK FIVE: Same as week four, but with added levels such as floor work
  • WEEK SIX: Same as weeks four and five but with added levels such as more challenging arm and leg coordination within the choreography
  • WEEK SEVEN: Warm up (10 mins). Technique (20 mins) – circular springs exercise and other basic turns sequences to support new techniques learnt in previous weeks. Choreography (30 mins) – start learning new choreography
  • WEEK EIGHT: Same as week seven
  • WEEK NINE: Same as week eight
  • WEEK TEN: As above with more time spent polishing the latest choreography for sense of completion and confidence on the movement and techniques learnt throughout the term.

The pace is still class led but the last few weeks will move slightly quicker applying previous sequences learnt and adding slightly more complex routines. By week 10, students will have built up more confidence with the technique learnt, strength in dancing and have a better understanding of contemporary movement in their body.
