JEN WELCH Jen started dancing, performing, teaching and choreographing from a very early age in styles such as jazz, street, tap and musical theatre. As an adult, Jen then went on to consolidate her training in contemporary, ballet and contemporary jazz at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She has trained and worked with artists such as Rachel Lopez de Nieta, Rosemary Brandt, Hagit Yakira, Rosangela Silvestre and Tim Casson. Credits include T Mobile, BBC 2, Sadlers Wells, Richmix Festival, The Natural History Museum, plus many other dance festivals, theatre performances and private events across London.

Our Contemporary Dance Company is one of Stage & the City’s elite resident dance companies. The Company Contemporary Dance classes focus on sophisticated and in-depth contemporary dance routines. Our leading tutors will encourage students to push themselves by learning new lyrical routines in these weekly dance classes. This 10-week course will give you a high level of training and will be challenging but thoroughly enjoyable. The Company very much has a ‘family’ feel so you will be building confidence and making new friends at the same time!

Sign up for our Winter Term and be part of the Stage & the City Annual Charity Showcase raising money for children with or affected by cancer to attend our children’s school for much needed fun and respite. Your course fees for the winter term also include one free ticket to the showcase, you just need to let us know the name of your guest!

Get Performance Opportunities

Get the chance to perform on stage with Stage & the City’s elite resident dance company. Weekly rehearsals take place in our beautiful Kings Cross dance studios! Aside from the weekly dance classes for adults, their will be a chance to take part in extracurricular performances. These events will not be compulsory, although we encourage Company members to take part in as many as possible. The Company will perform in showcases, special events, private and public bookings and more. Secure your place at the auditions now.


ALL profits from this course will go towards the Fiorentini Foundation and helping disadvantaged children access the performing arts.

To be awarded a place in the company, you must audition. Don’t worry, we are not looking for perfection. Just a willingness to commit and give it your all. Alternatively, come to the Beginners class and chat with the teacher to see if she thinks you are ready.

Course Content - Summer Term (Winter Term TBC)

SPECIFIC SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN THIS TERM: Pirouettes, Travelling turns, Stamina with lyrical rhythm and faster paced choreography

  • WEEKS ONE, TWO AND THREE: Warm up (15 mins) – gentle cardio, yoga style strengthening, deeper stretches and breathing. Technique (20-30mins) focus on pirouette turns with other added exercises to support. Choreography (30 mins minimum) – more complex choreography than beginners, with focus on being ready to perform.
  • WEEKS FOUR, FIVE AND SIX: Warm up (15 mins) – gentle cardio, yoga style strengthening, deeper stretches and breathing. Technique (20-30mins) focus on travelling turns with other added exercises to support. Choreography (30 mins minimum) – continue working and adding onto existing chorography with attention to detail and sharpening performance skills.
  • WEEK SEVEN: As above (with option to change the choreography depending on general class consensus).
  • WEEKS EIGHT AND NINE: Warm up (15 mins) – gentle cardio, yoga style strengthening, deeper stretches and breathing. Technique (20-30mins) focus on stamina, lyrical movement and precision in the routines and taking the performance pace up a notch. Choreography (30 mins minimum) As above
  • WEEK TEN: As above with more time spent perfecting choreography and being ready to perform.

The pace is class led however we focus a lot on choreography detail, technique and musicality with an intention to perform as a company. The routines change every 3 – 4 weeks and most of the style is lyrical.
