Would you love to create a character and perform in scenes with other likeminded students? Do you adore the dark comedy of Mike Leigh’s masterpieces? Would you love to get under the skin of complex characters like Villanelle? This brand-new Acting for Beginners/ Improvers course is centred around developing believable and relatable characters from observation and improvisation.

Your challenge (should you choose to accept it) will culminate with an in-house showing which will be filmed for you to watch back and see your progress.

If you’ve always wanted to learn how to bring naturalism to performance and to understand what it takes to develop a three-dimensional character, then this is the course for you. Using Mike Leigh improvisation techniques such as hot-seating, esteemed actor and director, Claire Amias will lead you in this Acting for Improvers skills course.

This course is suitable for anybody who has done an acting for beginners course in the past or relishes the challenge of learning new skills in a short amount of time even if no prior experience. In 12 weeks you will perform in a mini showcase to friends and family.

This will be a fundraiser for the Fiorentini Foundation, supporting the creative outlet of children following the pandemic. So no need to be nervous about making mistakes! This challenge is all for a great cause!

Following this 12 week course, where you will create engaging characters from scratch, you may wish to continue onto following terms where you will start to look at scripted work. This course is also a good stepping stone should you wish to audition for Stage & the City’s Acting Company. All classes are fully Covid secure.

• Mike Leigh style improvisation, working from props, real life stimuli and observation
• Learning actors warm ups utilising breath and vocal techniques
• Working from physicality such as honing gesture
• Building believable characters
• Developing your confidence to perform
• Helping you to find and trust your voice
• Meet a new group of like-minded peers to safely socialise and learn with
• Work from basic premises and story lines to create scenarios
• Working one-to-one and as an ensemble with your teacher
• Create complex characters which you can then use in other work or scripts
• Understand diaphragmatic breathing and using breath to support text

This course will take place on Wednesday 6.30pm – 8.30pm, 22nd September- 8th December. ALL profits from this course will go towards Saving the Anna Fiorentini Kids Charity Theatre School.
