Auditioning is an important part of being an actor, and It is a skill that can be perfected with experience. We’ve listed 4 essential tips on how to prepare for an acting audition so you can walk into your next one with ease.
Understand your character
To make your performance convincing, you will need to understand the character. Reading the play is a must. If a director asks for your opinion on the script or the scene, you should be able to answer their questions with confidence. Don’t leave yourself open to negative critiques!
Work through the script and make a note of what other characters say about you. Find out what is driving you through the play/scene – this is your character’s objective.
Learn the lines
I hate to state the obvious, but learn your lines. Nothing screams “I’m not prepared” more than being halfway through a monologue and forgetting what you’re supposed to say. Sure, you might be able to save yourself by putting your improv skills into use, but the chances are, the people who are auditioning you will pick up on your blunder.
Practice your lines when you’re doing household tasks such as washing up or cleaning, you can even practice whilst in the shower! Practising in front of friends and family is also highly recommended. Once you’re confident in your performance, walking into an audition room will be far less daunting, and you’ll be less likely to mess up your performance.
Believe in Yourself
Self-doubt can be your biggest enemy. It’s normal to be nervous, but confidence is essential if you want to nail an audition. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect a total stranger to believe in you? Own your talent and always stay true to who you are.
Don’t Pressure Yourself
You will enjoy the audition process a lot more if you take the pressure of where you can. Even if you don’t get given the role, you should be grateful for the experience. Take the pressure off, what is meant to be will be!
